An iconic BARAD chrome mushroom table lamp designed by celebrated American lighting designer Robert Sonneman and manufactured in Taiwan by Titan Lighting, circa 1970s–1980s.

A quintessential expression of the Space Age movement, the BARAD transforms a remarkably simple arrangement of geometric forms into an exceptionally sculptural lighting object. A broad, low-profile 12.5-inch polished chrome dome appears to float above a substantial circular base, supported by two exceptionally slender parallel chrome columns.

The highly reflective finish heightens the lamp’s futuristic character, allowing its appearance to continually shift with its surroundings. When illuminated, the concealed light source casts a broad pool of light beneath the dome while producing a striking halo across the wall behind it. The bulb itself remains largely hidden from normal viewing angles, emphasizing the elegant silhouette rather than the mechanics of the fixture.

This example retains the particularly desirable Titan Lighting identification molded into the underside of the base: “MADE IN TAIWAN — TITAN LIGHTING.” Titan Lighting is documented in the vintage design trade as the Taiwanese manufacturer associated with production of Sonneman’s BARAD design. The lamp also features the distinctive cord arrangement found on Titan-produced examples, with the wiring routed through the vertical structure rather than simply emerging through the center of the base.

The restrained geometry, polished industrial material and almost aerodynamic profile are characteristic of Robert Sonneman’s approach to modern lighting, in which illumination and architecture become part of the same sculptural object.

At 17.5 inches tall and 12.5 inches in diameter, the lamp is substantial enough to function as a statement piece while retaining the elegant proportions that make the BARAD equally successful on a desk, console, side table or nightstand.

Condition: Very good vintage condition. The chrome retains a strong, highly reflective luster. There are some light scuffs and fine surface scratches to the upper dome, along with minor age-appropriate surface wear elsewhere. The scuffs are considerably less apparent under normal viewing conditions than in close inspection and do not detract from the lamp’s overall presentation. Please refer to photographs for condition. Lamp is shown illuminated and functioning.
