An exceptional matched pair of early 20th-century European Louis XV–style bombe commodes, dating approximately to circa 1910–1920, combining dramatically shaped cabinetry, richly decorated veneered surfaces, sculptural cast metal mounts, and substantial fossiliferous marble tops.
Each commode is built in the classic bombe form, with a serpentine façade and elegantly curved sides raised on cabriole legs. The warm reddish-brown veneered surfaces are embellished with elaborate gold-toned floral, foliate and scrolling decoration, creating the highly ornamental character associated with Belle Époque interpretations of 18th-century French furniture.
The decorative metalwork is particularly noteworthy. Substantial cast brass/bronze mounts accent the corners, drawer fronts and lower apron. Close examination of the reverse sides reveals irregular casting surfaces, hand-finished edges, natural oxidation and individually positioned mounting holes, giving the hardware considerable depth and character.
Each cabinet is surmounted by a thick, shaped fossiliferous beige marble top, richly patterned with visible shell and marine fossil inclusions in warm cream, ivory and pale blush tones. The shaped stone follows the serpentine contour of the cabinetry and is finished with a molded edge.
The interior construction retains extensive evidence of traditional cabinetmaking, including solid wood framing, thin secondary-wood panels, fitted drawer guides and traditionally joined drawer components. The undersides and concealed surfaces retain tool marks, oxidation, wear and variations in finish consistent with the age and hand-assembled character of the pair.
Both pieces display long-established age-related separations through portions of the veneered/decorated side panels, visible in the photographs. There are additional scattered scratches, small veneer losses, edge wear and finish variation consistent with more than a century of use. The marble tops retain light surface scratching, not very noticeable. These age-related characteristics have been left visible rather than heavily restored and contribute to the historical character of the pair.
An unusually decorative matched pair with substantial scale and architectural presence - ideal as bedside chests, salon cabinets, flanking commodes or statement pieces in a layered traditional, eclectic or collected interior.
