An exceptional late 19th century American surveying instrument by W. & J.E. Gurley, Troy, New York, widely regarded as one of the premier makers of precision scientific instruments in the United States during the 19th century.
Dating to approximately circa 1890–1905, this finely crafted brass transit/theodolite embodies the intersection of engineering, craftsmanship, and design from a pivotal era of American expansion and industrial advancement.
The piece features a fully articulated telescope, integrated compass dial with engraved directional markings, and a complex system of precision adjustment knobs, each element executed in solid brass with remarkable attention to detail. The instrument retains a beautifully aged, untouched patina, giving it a depth and authenticity that cannot be replicated.
Mounted on a sculptural wood base, it reads as both a functional artifact and a refined design object, making it equally suited for collectors of scientific instruments, architects, or interiors seeking a statement piece with intellectual and historical presence.
Objects of this caliber are increasingly sought after for their ability to anchor a space with authenticity, narrative, and material richness.
Condition:
Presented in very good antique condition with original patina and age-appropriate wear. Minor surface marks consistent with over a century of use. Untested for modern surveying accuracy and offered as a collectible and decorative object. Please note: We do not ship via mail at the moment, we are currently delivering (for free) to NYC and the local area.
