An exceptional vintage Italian metamorphic game table with two matching marquetry chairs, dating approximately to the late 1960s–1970s.
The set combines elaborate decorative craftsmanship with an ingenious layered gaming interior. When closed, the table presents as an elegant square parlor or card table with clipped corners, richly figured veneers and extensive floral and foliate marquetry across the top, apron and tapered legs.
The upper sections transform through multiple configurations. A reversible surface reveals a chess/checkers board, while the interior opens further to expose a fitted roulette gaming station with central roulette wheel, twin green betting layouts and numerous built-in hardwood compartments for cards, chips and other game pieces.
Especially appealing is the surviving original Italian roulette instruction sheet marked “Giuoco della Roulette,” an important period detail that reinforces the set’s Italian origin and original gaming function.
The two coordinating chairs feature richly figured veneered seats and curved backs decorated with matching floral marquetry, creating a highly cohesive three-piece ensemble. Their slender tapered legs complement the elegant proportions of the table.
The combination of extensive marquetry, metamorphic construction, concealed gaming functions and matching seating makes this an unusually decorative example of circa-1970 Italian entertainment furniture, equally compelling displayed closed or opened for play.
