A striking vintage architectural pedestal by Magnussen Presidential Furniture, crafted in the Philippines circa 1980s and retaining its original factory label.
Sculptural and distinctly Postmodern, the pedestal juxtaposes warm ivory-toned fossil stone with a slender dark patinated metal framework. Its composition draws heavily upon classical architecture, a substantial stepped plinth supports four elongated metal uprights, a suspended central stone block and an oversized capital-like top, while exaggerated proportions and exposed structure give the piece an unmistakably late-20th-century character.
The stonework is consistent with the Mactan or Philippine fossil-stone tradition, a material closely associated with furniture and decorative arts produced in Cebu during the latter decades of the 20th century. Mactan stone takes its name from Mactan Island, off the coast of Cebu in the Philippines, where the indigenous pale fossilized stone is found. Formed from ancient marine limestone, the material is prized for its naturally occurring shell and fossil inclusions, warm cream coloration and highly textural surface.
During the late 20th century, Cebu became an important center for the production of fossil-stone furniture for the international market. Philippine craftsmen transformed the regional material into highly sculptural tables, pedestals and decorative objects, often combining smooth finished surfaces with deliberately fractured or rough-hewn stone. These pieces were widely exported, and the Philippine origins of the style have only more recently received renewed attention from collectors and contemporary designers.
This pedestal beautifully demonstrates that contrast. Smooth architectural planes are set against deliberately rugged exposed edges at the upper and lower sections, emphasizing the organic character of the pale stone against the precision of the dark metal structure.
The piece retains its original Magnussen Presidential Furniture factory label reading “Made in the Philippines,” along with handwritten production information apparently identifying it as a 30-inch pedestal, corresponding precisely with its measured height.
At 30 inches tall, its proportions make it ideal for displaying sculpture, ceramics, a significant vessel or plant, while its unusual architectural construction allows it to function equally well as a freestanding sculptural object.
